Control Circuit Transformer Use

Control Circuit Transformers are known under a number of different names.   Control Power Transformers and  Industrial Control Transformers are two.  Motor Control Transformers is a third.  These devices are designed to supply a lowered control voltage to be used in charging up the coils in electromagnetic mechanisms.  Such devices might be motor starters, relays, timers and contactors.  All Control Circuit Transformers have these basics within their design but are used in a number of different spheres of application.  They can be found in industry, power transmission and distribution, small businesses, and many other fields of electrical power use.

Control Circuit Transformer Voltage Concerns

The VA rating is important.  It will directly affect the life of the Control Circuit Transformer.  It also reflects on the correct operation of the control devices it will supply.  The specifics of this discussion apply to Control Circuit Transformers in the 50 to 3000 VA range.  They will be of the dry-type category. 

When choosing a Control Circuit Transformer, two VA values should be considered.  The VA created when the electromagnetic mechanism being serviced is energized is called inrush VA.  This is the first of the VAs to be paid attention to.  Inrush VA lasts about 5 to 20 Milliseconds.  Some say as long as 50 milliseconds.   Inrush can exceed the transformer rating by as high as ten times.  Some sources suggest amounts up to 50 times, depending on the device it is connected to!  The Control Circuit Transformer chosen should be capable of managing this surge for the short time while also maintaining the secondary voltage in a specified range.

The second form of VA is called "sealed VA."  This is the level of volt-amperes necessary to keep the electromagnetic device in an energized condition.  This VA will need to be only five to ten times less than the inrush VA.  In the US, NEMA specifications are standard.  They require the AC contactor to correctly close at 85% of the rated coil voltage.  Further, when using a starter or contactor with a Control Circuit Transformer, either must correctly activate at 90% rated transformer line voltage. 

External Influences On Control Circuit Transformers

Control Circuit Transformer operation will be affected by load conditions.  Secondary voltage under no load may exceed nominal voltage by 10% when nominal voltage is supplied in the primary circuit.  If input is higher than normal the input condition can cause the secondary output to exceed as high as 145V.  This makes matching input and output voltages to their nominal values quite important. 

Careful attention must be placed on local power conditions.  If local voltages fall outside of correct parameters there may be a need for a different Control Circuit Transformer, or some adjustment of local conditions.  600V primary designs suffer worse from possible damage due to overloading.  This requires thicker and better transformer insulation and separation of windings. Such measures are included particularly for transformers operating at 600V primary.  Lower primary voltage designs are not as susceptible because of the smaller voltages used. 

Length of cable runs will also affect the situation.  Transformers adjusted for voltage drops may be used.  Additional relays may be necessary.  Otherwise, control devices might not function properly and refuse to pick up.  And induction or noise from adjacent installations can affect long cable runs.
