Control Transformer Sizing

Control Transformer Sizing is critical for proper and efficient operation.  It is possible for one to be too small like with any control transformer.  But one too large can be a detriment as well.  A proper balance will best serve where control circuits are being affected.   The following will cover the various factors to look for in proper Control Transformer Sizing.

Selection Steps In Control Transformer Sizing

Control Transformer Sizing starts with attention to three load circuit characteristics.  These are in addition to the required minimum voltage necessary to operation of the circuit.

  1. Inrush VA - Because an uncharged transformer or device may draw up to 10 times normal current for a limited time, the voltage incurred is referred to as inrush.  This only lasts for as much as 50 milliseconds; the time it takes to energize electromagnetic devices.  The construction of a good control transformer demands that it can survive this surge successfully without throwing off the optimum current it is designed to provide. 
  2. Sealed VA - This is the current that the transformer is expected to provide on an extended basis.
  3. Inrush load power factor - Without a detailed study via vector analysis, this quantity is difficult to establish.  To compensate, a 40% power factor is assumed.  This has been upgraded from 20% previously assumed after sufficient testing of major brand control devices.

Calculation Of Control Transformer Size

Control Transformer Sizing should follow the steps listed below:

Determine Load and supply voltages  The load voltage is determined by the operating voltage of whatever is connected with the secondary side of the transformer.

Determine the supply voltage  This will be whatever voltage is provided by the power source to the primary side of the transformer.

Find the total sealed VA  This step in Control Transformer Sizing is accomplished by adding the required VA of all devices and components connected to the secondary side of the transformer which will be energized at the same time.  This includes all solenoids, pilot lamps, relays, timers, contactors, etc. 

Compute the inrush VA of all said components to be energized together, as in the point listed above.  Include the sealed VA of any without an inrush.  This will account for their sealed VA load, though there is no inrush to them.  This will include things like timers and lamps.

Use either of the methods below to calculate the inrush VA of your selection:

Transformer Inrush VA = [(sealed VA)² =(inrush VA)²]

Sealed VA + inrush VA = Transformer inrush*

*This second calculation will yield a somewhat oversize transformer.  It must be determined if the supply voltage is consistent within a 10% variation as that or more will cause difficulties in Control Transformer sizing.  Nameplate VA must exceed sealed VA as found in the first step above.  Otherwise, choose a slightly larger transformer.
