Control Transformer Wiring

Control Transformer Wiring  can be relegated to two separate areas of discussion.  The first would cover the internal wiring.  The second would apply to all external wiring.  Number one has to do with actual design and construction.  Number two has to do with installation and connection to what it will service.  Control Transformer Wiring is based on all the fundamentals of any transformer, despite that control transformers have a specific purpose.

Internal Control Transformer Wiring

The essentials of what is a transformer will cover the main issues of how transformers are wired and why.  Transformer facts cover pretty well what to expect in any transformer, outside of specific filters, switches and other additional tricks used to establish specific parameters.  In many ways Control Transformer Wiring will emulate that of, for instance, isolation transformers or medical isolation transformers.  These accomplish much the same thing in-so-far-as they provide isolation, stable currents and protect personnel.  The only exception is that Control Transformer Wiring will have a higher voltage at the primary, where isolation transformers often do not.  It is the specification of exact voltages from primary to secondary and the addition of anti-inrush current features, as well as filters and other attributes to give precise current characteristics that distinguishes control transformers.  Lack of attention to exact tappings and voltage changes across primary to secondary may build in errors for meters and monitoring equipment.

External Control Transformer Wiring

Control Transformer Wiring includes what will occur outside the transformer.  Careful selection of mounting and cable runs is necessary in Control Transformer Wiring.  The fact that these transformers will usually be connected with any number of different sensitive devices demands adherence to specific voltage ranges.  Where this is not essential in normal transformer settings, it is absolutely crucial when coming to control systems.  Without sufficient care the control device may not work properly.

Where internal care was necessary to maintain a correct value, same goes for external connections.  Long cable runs can create inopportune voltage drops.  This can result in voltages too low for accurate readings on meters, or too low to initiate stopping and starting mechanisms.  On/off switches may not properly activate.  Incorrect cable size can cause the same thing.  Unshielded cable will allow transient signals to cause interference and throw of meters or other such operations.  It is also often very critical for Control Transformer Wiring to route through NEMA containers.  Indeed, a whole control system may be installed in a single enclosure for simplicity and for ease of installation, servicing and operation. 

Proper wiring of control transformers also will often include breakers, fuses, bussing connections, and even perhaps computer control connectivity.  Some versions may have automated safety breakers and other enhanced features; all of which are included in the internal or external wiring that may be done.
