Voltage Control Transformer Introduction

Voltage Control Transformers are highly desirable given that industry has moved in the direction of further and more finely-enhanced applications. Voltage Control Transformers are available to assure an even and precise voltage environment. Components nowadays contain sensitive electronics or need precise power conditions not provided by mains power. Controls and measurements would otherwise be awry due to unwanted fluctuations. Machining, monitoring and control operations may fail to reach optimum results without this. Many Transformers also provide isolation in which no actual connection exists between primary and secondary. In the case of Voltage Control Transformers it is more vital than most because meters, switches and controls demand this isolation to make them safe from damage and from exposing personnel from higher voltages.

Voltage Control Transformer Variations

Some Voltage Control Transformers are considered Motor Control Transformers when dedicated to meeting optimum motor conditions. Others are referred to as Control Circuit Transformers if used in circuits where monitoring or metering circuits are involved. An interesting variation is the constant voltage transformer where a very even voltage is produced despite up and down fluctuations in available power. When variable speed or adjustable voltage on the fly is desired (for testing or experimentation), one can use a Variable Transformer. An alternative to the variable speed transformer is the Variable Speed Drive. This is actually not a Voltage Control Transformer, but may be the desired product and a good one to explore. It is, instead, an electronically converted power signal that can be matched through solid-state electronics to be the desired voltage and values. The VSD is often the answer when looking for motor speed or torque control.

Valuable Attributes Of Voltage Control Transformers

Especially applicable in a Voltage Control Transformer is the ability of the transformer to manage inrush currents that will often exceed up to 10 times the operating voltage. Then, too, these Voltage Control Transformers also will assure that the running voltage does not sag during this time so that sensitive parameters are maintained. Start, stop and operating circuits are not interrupted. Without this, solenoids or other electromagnetic devices may kick in or out at inopportune times. This can result in premature shutoffs and other undesirable situations. Some of the other variations of transformers listed above may not include these two control features and will not fit some control needs as a result.

It's What's Inside A Voltage Control Transformer That Counts!

The appearance of a transformer will not tell what type of transformer it is. Voltage Control Transformers can be physically very small or very large. And it is not uncommon to find medium voltage Voltage Control Transformers. Appearance, physical size, and primary voltage capacity are not part of the basic definition of a Voltage Control Transformer and are simply attributes of many kinds of transformers. One has to know it was constructed with voltage control in mind since these transformers have certain design differences inside. Such differences are entirely devoted to producing the prime characteristics of this type of transformer.

The physical construction differences in a Voltage Control Transformer would include adjustment in turn ratios provided for through multiple winding taps. Primary windings are doubled, so as to allow the two windings to be connected either in series or in parallel. This allows the same transformer to service a higher number of primary voltages. Insulation in windings and leads is often heavier, especially in those dealing with higher primary voltages, so as to prevent early failures due to the inrush currents they will regularly undergo. Special capacitors or filtering devices are employed towards minimizing output variations. A Voltage Control Transformer must always include the abilities to:

deliver a desired voltage to the load
offset voltage drops resulting from loads
adjust for voltage changes in input supply
provide stable and efficient isolation between primary and secondary windings

Individually, some of these can be found in several other types of transformers. It is the combination of all these attributes and not the presence of any one or two that makes a Voltage Control Transformer what it is.
